Letitia Ann Burton (d/o William and Nancy Ann Hawes Quarles Burton)
Letitia Ann Burton married Rhode Islander, US Naval Capt. Jesse Arnold,
April 26, 1832. He had commanded a privateer during the War of 1812 before
coming to Tennessee and working in the mercantile business with
William Burton, Jr. Jesse and Letitia Arnold had three children:
Ova b: April 24, 1839
Avo b: 1843
Jesse b: February 4, 1846
In 1840 they were together with their first child, baby Ova (1), living in
District 10 of Jackson County, neighbors to Letitia Ann’s Aunt Tabitha
Quarles and Uncle William Hawes and her cousin, Stephen D. Burton.
Letitia Ann Arnold and her three children: Ova (11), Avo (7), and
Jesse, Jr. (4), were in District 13, Jackson County, Tennessee, in 1850,
living next door to her sister, Elizabeth Jane Burton Apple. Ova’s future
husband, James McDonald Goodpasture, was living in Overton County.
Capt. Jesse Arnold died February 4, 1846, the very day his son,
Jesse Arnold, Jr., was born. Jesse Arnold, Jr. later became the
President of the Bank of Cookeville and also the first Mayor of the
City of Cookeville. Letitia Ann Burton Arnold died July 17, 1893.

These biographical sketches were written by my uncle, Ernest Houston
Boyd, Jr., my mother’s brother. He is a Cookeville resident.
The first is about my great-great-grandparents, Dr. James M. and
Ova Arnold Goodpasture.
The second sketch is about my great-grandparents, Alvin Whitten
and Mary Goodpasture Boyd.
The last is about my grandparents, Judge Ernest Houston
and Mattie Ragland Boyd, Sr.
